Lubo Kristek’s Life
Lubo Kristek (born 8 May 1943, Brno) is one of the most prominent figures of European visual art of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His work transcends the boundaries of traditional artistic disciplines – alongside sculpture and painting, he has devoted himself to assemblage, happenings, and monumental works in public spaces. Over the course of more than six decades, he has created a distinctive artistic universe in which imagination, symbolism, a critical view of society, and a profound interest in humanity and its place in time intertwine.
As early as the 1960s, Kristek experimented with the fusion of visual art, music, and movement. After emigrating to West Germany in 1968, he developed his work within an international context and gradually gained recognition through both his public artworks and his original happenings, which combined visual art, theatre, philosophy, and spontaneous audience participation. These events became an integral part of his lifelong artistic practice, transforming the artwork into a living experience.
Kristek is the author of numerous sculptures, assemblages, and monumental works installed in public spaces across Europe, including Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovakia. His work frequently explores themes of human freedom, responsibility, historical memory, consumer society, and the relationship between humanity and nature. Characteristic features of his artistic language include symbolism, metaphor, and the unexpected juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated elements. Although his work is often associated with Surrealism, postmodern art, happenings, and performance, it retains a distinctly personal character.
After returning to the Czech Republic, Kristek established his unique creative and living space in Podhradí nad Dyjí – Chateau Lubo (Zámeček Lubo). It is here that the Lubo Kristek Museum (Muzeum celoživotního díla Lubo Kristka) was founded, offering visitors an opportunity to enter the artist’s world in the authentic setting where he still lives and creates. The permanent exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of his lifelong oeuvre, ranging from early drawings to sculptures, assemblages, paintings, and documentation of happenings and public artworks.
A visit to the museum is not merely an encounter with individual works of art, but also an extraordinary artistic journey in itself. Throughout his career, Lubo Kristek has continuously sought new forms of expression, inviting viewers to explore the connections between the visible and the hidden, reality and imagination. His work remains a powerful testimony to the power of art to transcend the boundaries of time, space, and ordinary perception.
